Men's Hockey Edges Quinnipiac 2-1 for Seventh Straight Win
November 26, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Junior Kevin Kaiser scored off a Princeton end-to-end rush in the final minute of the second period to lead the seventh-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 2-1 win against Quinnipiac on Wednesday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The win was Princeton's seventh in a row.
Princeton got off to a fast start as it played its first game at Hobey Baker Rink in nearly three weeks. The Tigers fired 22 first period shots on Quinnipiac goaltender Bud Fisher and jumped to an early lead in the fourth minute when sophomore Sam Sabky scored his second goal of the season off the power play.
Eleven seconds after Quinnipiac's David Marshall was whistled for slashing, the Tigers converted with their second power-play goal in as many games. Junior Dan Bartlett won an offensive zone faceoff back to junior defenseman Brad Schroeder, who took a point shot that Fisher was able to handle. The rebound though, bounced right to Sabky, who slid it past Fisher to put the Tigers ahead 1-0 at 3:56.
Princeton pressured throughout the remainder of the period, putting 22 shots on goal to Quinnipiac's seven, but would have to wait until the final minute of the second period to go ahead by two goals. Princeton outshot the Bobcats by a 12-9 margin in the second period and went ahead 2-0 when Kaiser scored from the doorstep.
Kaiser started the play up-ice with a rink-wide pass to sophomore Kevin Lohry at the Princeton blueline. Lohry carried the puck in and dropped it to sophomore Matt Godlewski trailing the play, and Godlewski then found Kaiser all alone in front, where he redirected the pass by Fisher to give Princeton a 2-0 lead after two periods. The goal proved to be the game winner and marked the third straight game where the line of Kaiser, Lohry and senior Brandan Kushniruk has accounted for the game-winning goal.
Quinnipiac scored in the third period on the power-play to get within a goal when Brandon Wong rifled a shot into the top right corner of the net off a face-off on the power play at 3:02, but that was as close as Quinnipiac would get as Princeton and junior goaltender Zane Kalemba shut the door on the Bobcats for the remaining 17 minutes.
Kalemba finished the night with 24 saves for the win, while Fisher made 39 in the loss. Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 41-29, reaching 40 shots for the fifth time this season. Both teams scored on the power play. Quinnipiac's power-play marker snapped a streak of 31 straight kills for the Tigers.
Princeton's win was its first ever against Quinnipiac at home and its second against the Bobcats this season. The Tigers are now 8-1-0 overall and 7-1-0 in ECAC play. Princeton returns to action on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against fourth-ranked Northeastern in the opening round of the RPI Tournament. The game pits the first-place teams in the ECAC and Hockey East.
