Men's Soccer Draws with Penn in Home Finale
November 08, 2008 | Men's Soccer
Penn completed the game with 17 shots, while Princeton had 13. Princeton's senior goalkeeper Joe Walter made six saves, and Penn's Drew Healy also stopped six shots and there was an additional team save.
The Quakers had 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
After a first half that saw just seven shots, the second half was high energy from the opening kick. Just one minute into the half, Penn's Alex Grendi has a free kick from about 25 yards out that was a high blast of a shot that was tipped up and over the cross bar by Walter.
Four minutes later Mike Klein was on the receiving end of a loose ball that squirted into the 18-yard box. Walter came out of his box and Klein fired a shot directly into the hands of Walter.
Princeton's first chance of the half came in the 58th minute off a free kick. Sophomore Brandon Busch was taken down by a Penn player, giving the Tigers a chance to make something happen. Sophomore Josh Walburn took the kick and fired a low shot around the man-made wall where Healy had to make a diving stop.
In the 77th minute, freshman Colby Hahn picked up a pass from junior Devin Muntz and sent a shot in on goal, but the ball was quickly collected by Healy.
With 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Andrew Ferry tried to redirect a Omid Shokoufandeh shot, but his nifty footwork sent the ball wide of the far post.
One minute later, Grendi took a free kick from 20 yards out but the high shot was stopped by a leaping Walter. Lee Rubenstein had another chance for the Quakers, when he had a close-range shot, but Walter stopped the ball at the near corner.
With one minute to play, Ferry had a shot blocked by sophomore Ben Burton and the Tigers regained possession to take the ball down the other end of the field where Busch sent a shot just wide of the post, sending the game into overtime.
Three minutes into the first overtime, freshman Antoine Hoppenot had the ball on the right flank, and Healy came out to try to prevent the shot, but slipped on the grass and Hoppenot had a chance at the net. Multiple Penn defenders quickly ran to the goal line, and Hoppenot's shot was kicked away by a Penn player.
With four minutes to play in the second overtime, Walburn tried to put the game away, but his shot went right into Healy to preserve the scoreless tie.
Princeton improves to 5-9-2 on the season, and 2-2-2 in the Ivy League. Penn is now 10-2-4 and 4-1-1 in league play.
The Tigers will play their final game of the 2008 season on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m., at Yale.
