Princeton Fencing Splits Final Day of Ivy League Round-Robin

PRINCETON ? The Princeton fencing teams split their final two bouts of the Ivy League Round-Robin event that wrapped up Sunday on the indoor track at Jadwin Gym.
Both the men's and women's teams defeated Yale 15-12 and fell to Penn 20-7. Three Tigers earned All-Ivy honors as junior epeeist Jasjit Bhinder claimed first-team honors for the second straight year, going 13-5 against Ivy opponents. Sophomore Chandler Clay was named a second-team epeeist, compiling a 12-6 record in dual meet bouts and freshman epeeist Graham Wicas also earned second-team honors, finishing 8-4 in his Ivy bouts.
The women finished the Ivy round-robin with a record of 2-4 while the men were 2-3. Columbia claimed both the men's and women's titles, going undefeated on both sides.
Against Yale, sophomore Thomas Abend and freshman John Stogin each went 3-0 to help win the sabre weapon, 8-1. The epeeists, led by Wicas at 3-0, went 5-4 to clinch the match on the men's side. Princeton's women picked up five wins in the epee, six with the foil and four in sabre with every Princeton fencer either going 2-1 or 1-2 against the Bulldogs.
The Quakers took all six weapons between the men's and women's teams in their dual-meet bout with the Orange and Black. Caroline Merz, a freshman sabreist, was the only multi-time winner against Penn with a 2-1 record. On the men's side, epeeist Tommi Hurme was the only multi-time winner, also at 2-1.
Select Princeton fencers under 20 years of age will compete at the Junior Olympics in Charlotte, N.C. next weekend. Abend, Stogin and freshman epeeist Mike Elfassy are among those scheduled to attend.
