Women's Hockey Closes Regular Season at St. Lawrence and Clarkson
February 21, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team will play its final regular season games of the 2007-08 season this weekend at nationally ranked St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Princeton enters the weekend in fifth in the league standings as it looks to climb a spot in the final weekend.
Princeton is now 8-2-4 in its last 14 games and will look to enter the playoffs strong with a good weekend in the North Country. The Tigers currently sit fifth in the ECAC Hockey standings, with an eye on a top-four finish and home-ice for the first round of the playoffs. Princeton currently sits three points behind fourth-place Dartmouth and four points behind third-place Clarkson. Princeton has a one-point lead on sixth-lace Colgate and four points on seventh-place Cornell. Princeton faces St. Lawrence and Clarkson this weekend, while Dartmouth visits Cornell and Colgate. Those two also face Harvard this weekend.
Princeton garnered just a point in last weekend's series with Harvard and Dartmouth. On Friday night, Princeton outplayed Harvard much of the night, but a Harvard goal with five minutes left snapped a 1-1 deadlock and the Crimson added an empty-netter for the 3-1 win. Senior Brittany Salmon scored in the win as Princeton outshot Harvard 31-24.
The following night, Dartmouth scored with the goaltender pulled in the final minute to forge a 2-2 tie. Goals from sophomore Melanie Wallace and junior Annie Greenwood gave Princeton a 2-0 lead through two periods, but Dartmouth saved its best period for last and was able to tie the game in the closing minute.
Greenwood and freshman Sasha Sherry led Princeton offensively over the weekend as each recorded two points. Greenwood had a goal and an assist and Sherry added two helpers. Senior Marykate Oakley had an assist on Saturday and she continues to lead the team in scoring with 29 points. Sherry comes next with 21 and Greenwood and Salmon each have 20. Greenwood's 12 goals leads the team in that category.
Princeton will look to gain ground in the standings this Friday at sixth-ranked St. Lawrence. The Saints are 23-8-1 overall and 16-3-1 in the league. The Saints enter the weekend having won three straight and are 9-1-1 in their last 11 games, their only loss coming at Colgate. St. Lawrence swept Yale and Brown last weekend.
The two teams met on Oct. 27 in Princeton with St. Lawrence winning 3-1. The Saints ran out to a 3-0 lead in the game before senior Lizzie Keady got Princeton on the board early in the third period. Princeton is 22-16-3 all-time against St. Lawrence, but leads in Canton, 13-6-1.
On Saturday, Princeton takes on Clarkson to complete the regular season. Clarkson is 21-6-5 overall and 12-5-3 in the league. The Golden Knights are 7-1-2 in their last 10 with their lone loss coming to St. Lawrence. Clarkson shut out Brown and defeated Yale last weekend.
Princeton won the game when the two teams met on Oct. 26 in Princeton by a 3-2 score. Oakley had a hand in all three goals in the win, setting up Salmon's first goal, and scoring the next two. The game winner came midway through the third period. Princeton is 8-0-1 all-time against Clarkson and is 4-0-0 in games played in Potsdam.
Princeton will play in the ECAC Hockey playoffs next weekend at a site and against an opponent to be determined.
