Tigers Defeat St. John's, St. Joseph's, In Men's Tennis Doubleheader At Jadwin Gym
February 24, 2008 | Men's Tennis
Playing its first matches in 24 days, the Princeton men's tennis team earned a pair of victories Sunday afternoon at Jadwin Gym first by outlasting St. John's 4-3 and then dominating St. Joseph's by a 6-1 score.
The Tigers, who improved to 3-2 in the spring, lost the doubles point to St. John's in a pair of tiebreaks but used a pair of three-set victories in singles to come back for a match victory. At No. 6, sophomore Ilya Trubov defeated Pavel Cerny 6-2 in the third set, while Tiger No. 1 player Peter Capkovic lost the first set to Artem Vlaskenko 6-1 before extending the match with a win in a second-set tiebreak and then winning the deciding third set 6-3.
Princeton also got straight-set victories in singles from George Carpeni, who won a tough 6-4, 6-4 match with Martin Kosut at No. 3, and No. 4 singles player Charlie Brosens, who had the easiest victory of the day for Princeton with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Asaf Honig.
The Tigers got off to a better start in doubles against St. Joseph's, losing just 10 games total in winning all three singles matches, and then quickly clinched the team match with four straight-set singles victories. Three of those wins came from players who did not play singles in the St. John's match, No. 4 Jonathan Leslie, No. 5 Mark Gober and No. 6 Alex Faust. Gober defeated Nick Tuxen 6-2 and 6-4, while Faust beat Pat Cerutti 6-1 and 6-4.
Leslie lost just four games in a straight-set win over Phil Garabedian at No. 4.
Princeton will travel to the Southeast next weekend, visting Clemson and Furman in South Carolina and Georgia State in Atlanta Feb. 29-March 2.
