Men's Swimming/Diving Stays Perfect At DeNunzio With 183-109 Win Over Navy
February 09, 2008 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Princeton got individual victories from 11 different competitors to remain perfect all-time at DeNunzio with a 183-109 victory over EISL rival Navy. The win, which also avenges a regular season defeat at Navy last season, improves Princeton to 7-1 overall, 6-1 in the EISL.
Princeton opened the meet by finishing 1-2-3 in the 200 medley relay. The team of Doug Lennox, George Rae-Grant, Michael Carter and Geoff Faux took the event in 1:31.56, while the foursome of A.J. Walker, Easton Chen, Michael Baity and Alex Verdegem placed second in 1:34.16. Swimming as an exhibition team, Dan O'Connor, Seok Jun Lee, Drew Woodbury and Christopher D'Ambrosia took third in 1:34.72.
That set off a run of individual victories that put Princeton comfortably ahead early on. Junior Robvert Griest, one of the two-time defending EISL champions' most consistent scorers, won the 1000 free in 9:19.51, while freshman teammate Pat Biggs placed second in 9:24.26. Sophomore Jon Hartmann won the 200 free in 1:40.18, while classmate Chris Quemana finished just off the pace in 1:40.91.
Lennox, already an Olympic qualifier for Puerto Rico, won the 100 back in 50.24, and sophomore Rae-Grant took the 100 breast in 57.27. Junior Dan Eckel won the 200 fly in 1:49.13. Verdegem, a member of the talented freshman class, edged out Baity in a thrilling 50 free by .02 of a second (21.10/21.12). Amazingly, two Princeton Tigers would put forth an even closer finish in the 100 free, as D'Ambrosia's winning time of 46.23 came in .01 quicker than Carter's second-place time.
Walker, a sophomore, topped freshman Colin Hanna to win the 200 back in 1:50.41, and Lee, who finished second in the 100 breast, won the 200 breast in a close finish with junior teammate Bern Ebersole. Biggs came back to win the 500 free in 4:34.81.
There was success on the diving board as well for Princeton. Sophomore Dan Dickerson won the 1-meter competition in 306.90, while senior Stuart Malcolm finished second in the 3-meter competition with 333.37 points.
