PRINCETON -- Junior Brett Wilson had a goal and an assist as the 19th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team scored three second period goals to defeat Yale 4-2 in front of a sellout crowd on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. The win was Princeton's ninth in its last 10 games.
Princeton jumped onto the scoreboard early when senior Mike Moore scored 1:07 into the contest. After an offensive zone faceoff win by Wilson, junior Lee Jubinville chipped the puck to Moore at the point, whose shot eluded Yale netminder Alec Richards for Moore's second goal of the season.
Yale turned the momentum in its favor following the goal and outshot Princeton 16-10 in the opening period. Yale evened the score at 7:45 when Brendan Mason scored on a rebound from Jeff Anderson and Tom Dignard.
Princeton then went ahead in the second period with three goals in a span of 3:20. The first came shorthanded at 8:26 when sophomore Brad Schroeder played the puck out of the Tiger zone to Wilson. Wilson and Jubinville came into the Yale zone on a 2-on-1 and Wilson sent the puck to the net. Richards, looking for a redirect, misplayed the shot and it got by him for Wilson's 10th goal of the season.
The Tigers then took control with two goals in 17 seconds. First, senior Kyle Hagel netted his second goal of the year on the third rebound of a scramble in front of the Yale net. Junior Brandan Kushniruk and sophomore Kevin Kaiser assisted on the goal. Then moments later, senior Landis Stankievech added his fifth of the year from freshman Kevin Lohry and senior Keith Shattenkirk.
Yale scored once more in the second period when Denny Kearney scored from in front, but would get no closer as Princeton held on for the 4-2 win.
Princeton sophomore goaltender Zane Kalemba made 34 saves for his 12th win of the season, while Richards and Billy Blas? combined for 36 saves in the Yale net.
Princeton is now 14-9 overall, 11-5 in ECAC Hockey and 7-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers play an ECAC and Ivy series next weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth.
