Delaware Rallies For Win in Princeton Baseball Opener

NEWARK, Del. -- The Princeton baseball team scored 30 runs in 13 innings to split its season-opening doubleheader on Saturday at Delaware. Princeton dropped the opener 13-12 and won the nightcap 19-4. Sophomore Jack Murphy homered in both games.
Game 1
Princeton scored 11 runs in the first three innings of the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Delaware, but the Blue Hens scored nine times over the final three innings to win the game 12-11.
Sophomore Jack Murphy and senior Spencer Lucian led Princeton with three RBIs each, while junior Derek Beckman had three hits, including two doubles. Lucian also had two doubles and Murphy hit a three-run home run.
Princeton jumped on Delaware starter Mike McGuire early, scoring all 11 runs off of him. In the first inning Murphy hit his three run homer and freshman Matt Connor walked and junior Adrian Turnham singled. A fourth run came when sophomore Jon Broscious tripled home junior Andrew Doupe.
The Tigers added three more runs in the second period on a run-scoring doubles from junior Dan DeGeorge and Lucian, as well as a sac fly from Connor.
Delaware got two runs back in the bottom of the second, but Princeton made the lead 11-2 in the third as Lucian had a two-run double, Connor singled in a run, and Turnham drove in the fourth run.
Princeton senior starter Christian Staehely went four innings in the game and allowed three runs, only one earned, on six hits. He was relieved by sophomore Langford Stuber, who surrendered eight runs on six hits. He gave up one run in the fifth and the rest in the sixth without recording an out. Freshman Tim Feess came on to relieve him, but could not get out of the inning before Delaware drew even at 11-11.
In the top of the seventh inning, Beckman led off with a single and reached third with two outs, but Princeton could not bring him home. In the bottom half of the inning, Adam Taskonas reached on an error to lead off and he scored on Alex Bucholz's double.
Delaware's David Slovak picked up the win as Delaware moved to 3-1 on the season, while Feess took the loss and Princeton is 0-1. The teams will play the second game of the doubleheader later today.
Game 2
In the second game of the day, Delaware went ahead 1-0 in the bottom the first inning, but Princeton jumped ahead with a six-run second inning. Then Princeton scored 10 runs in the sixth of a game that ended after six because of darkness.
DeGeorge led the way with two hits, three runs scored and four RBIs. Broscious drove in three runs and four others drove in two runs each. Beckman has three hits in the win.
Sophomore David Hale drove in the first run of the inning with a single, then Beckman followed up with another. A fielder's choice by DeGeorge drove in a third run and Connor and Murphy added additional RBIs in the inning.
Murphy hit a solo homer and Hale and Beckman then doubled in runs in the second to give the Tigers a 9-3 lead. The score stayed there until Princeton put 10 runs on the board in the sixth. Big hits in the inning included a two-run single form Turnham, a three-run double from Broscious and a two-run double by DeGeorge. Delaware added a final run in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called.
Senior Steve miller pitched all six innings for Princeton and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out 11 batters. Corey Crispell took the loss for Delaware. He surrendered the first nine runs.
Princeton is back in action with another doubleheader tomorrow at Delaware.
