Uncle Bill, Princeton To Host Hofstra As Tierneys Go Head To Head
March 13, 2008 | Men's Lacrosse
The first meeting as head coaches between Bill Tierney and his nephew Seth Tierney wasn't decided until eight seconds remained, as Princeton edged Hofstra 5-4 on Tommy Davis' late goal. Bill Tierney will settle for the same result, and the same goals allowed for that matter, in this weekend's rematch.
Princeton and Bill Tierney host Hofstra and Seth Tierney Saturday at 2:30 (ESPNU, WPRB FM 103.3) at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium. It will be Bill Tierney's 299th game as Tiger head coach and Seth Tierney's 18th game as Pride head coach.
Princeton comes into the game hoping to avoid allowing double figures in goals in three straight games of the same season for the first time since 1988, Bill Tierney's first with the Tigers. Princeton, the nation's leader in scoring defense a year ago at 6.2 goals per game, has allowed 26 goals the last two weeks combined in losses to Johns Hopkins and Virginia and has allowed 10.7 goals per game through three games this year.
Hofstra comes into the game after defeating Hopkins 8-7 in overtime last week on a goal by freshman Tom Card. The Pride are currently ranked 10th in the USILA coaches' poll, one of five teams in this week's Top 10 on the Princeton schedule.
