Princeton Starts Spring Break Trip at UNC Greensboro
March 14, 2008 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team begins its Southern Spring Break swing this weekend with three games at UNC Greensboro. The trip also includes a pair of games against third-ranked North Carolina and four games at Navy.
It's been a nice start of the season for the Tigers who have excelled at the plate, on the mound and in the field. Princeton's team average now stands at .320 following last weekend's three-game sweep at Richmond. Sophomore Jack Murphy, who is hitting .458 with hits in all seven games, leads the Tigers. He has four homers and 13 RBIs. Senior Spencer Lucian is hitting .409 with six stolen bases and junior Adrian Turnham lifted his average to .379 and ranks second on the team 10 RBIs.
On the mound, the Tiger pitching staff continued its strong start as Princeton lowered its team ERA to 4.75 at Richmond. In the first game, seniors Steven Miller and Christian Staehely each struck out five in a win. The next day, freshman Dan Barnes and sophomore David Hale both had strong starts and picked up wins. Junior Brad Gemberling, freshman David Palms and freshman Matt Welsh were all strong in relief.
Princeton will return to action on Saturday afternoon for the first of three games at UNC Greensboro. The teams also play each other on Sunday afternoon and Monday night. Princeton and UNCG have met in each of the past two seasons as part of Princeton's Spring Break trip. Princeton is 1-4 all-time against the Spartans, which swept two games in 2006 and took two of three last season.
UNC Greensboro is 8-4 this season and was swept in a Tuesday-Wednesday series by Clemson, dropping each game by a run. The Spartans are hitting .326 as a team and have a 5.19 team ERA.
