March 17, 2008 | Men's Tennis
Princeton won the doubles point in dramatic fashion, but San Diego State won the final five singles matches on the way to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams at the Aztec Tennis Center Monday afternoon.
The No. 67 Tigers took a 1-0 lead after George Carpeni and Alex Krueger-Wyman outlasted Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez by a 9-7 score at No. 1 doubles. Princeton (6-4) then took a 2-0 match lead after Krueger-Wyman dominated Golas at No. 2 singles, but the No. 56 Aztecs won the other five singles matches, four of them in straight sets.
At No. 4 singles, Princeton freshman Ryan Kim took his match with Gomez to a third set by winning the second set 6-0, but Gomez won a 10-point tiebreak after the team match had been clinched.
Danny Heidecker clinched the match for SDSU (8-5), holding off Alex Vuckovic in a tough 6-3, 6-4 match at No. 5 singles.
The Tigers will play Utah in San Diego Wednesday, then play at Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine later in the week.
