Tommi Hurme Wins NCAA Regional Epee as Tigers Get First, Second in Weapon
March 02, 2008 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
MADISON, N.J. -- Tommi Hurme and Graham Wicas took the first two spots in men's epee at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional held Saturday at Drew University.
Hurme, a senior, and Wicas, a freshman, led a strong epee class for the Tigers at the regional as another freshman, Nathaniel Sulat, took fifth. All three have an excellent chance of continuing on to the NCAA Championships held Mar. 13-16 at Ohio State.
Two other Tiger men finished in the top dozen in their weapon as sophomore Clayton Flanders took eighth in the foil and freshman John Stogin took ninth in the sabre. Both will be eligible for at-large consideration for inclusion in the national event.
A pair of fifth-place finishes led Princeton on the women's side as junior Jasjit Bhinder placed in that spot in the epee and freshman Lyuba Docheva finished there in the sabre. With the region being allotted six or seven spots for the NCAA finals depending on weapon, both have a good chance of advancing to the national stage.
In the foil, freshman Mina Zargham was 13th and sophomore Karen Petsche was 14th while sophomore Chandler Clay was 10th in the epee. Rookie Caroline Merz was 11th in the sabre and senior Cara DiGirolamo was right behind in 12th place.
