Three-Run Third Sparks BYU in 6-1 Win over Princeton Softball

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- BYU broke through with two home runs in the fourth inning to score the game's first runs on its way to a 6-1 win over the Princeton softball team Thursday afternoon at Stanford.
The loss drops Princeton to 3-12 overall with five games left to play at Stanford's tournament. Friday, Princeton will meet East Carolina and Wisconsin in a pair of afternoon contests.
Princeton starter Jamie Lettire (1-2) had allowed BYU (16-11) only a double and a walk over the first three innings. In the fourth, Daniela Snow's home run cashed in a leadoff walk and Emi Snow Willing's solo shot pushed the Cougars ahead 3-0.
BYU got two singles and a walk as it picked up two more runs in the fifth, one of them scoring on an RBI-single and the other on a wild pitch. The Cougars scored their final run in the sixth when a bases-loaded walk forced home a run for a 6-1 lead.
Princeton's run came in the fifth, an inning that saw Princeton get three of its five hits on the game. Kathryn Welch's single scored Brianna Moreno from second to pull the Tigers within 5-1.
Lettire threw five innings, giving up five hits and striking out two. Kristen Schaus threw the last two innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Princeton's day will begin at approximately 2 p.m. PT Friday against East Carolina with the Wisconsin game following.
