Princeton Crew Season Opens With Heavies, Open At Home; Lights Start Season On Road
March 28, 2008 | Women's Rowing - Open
The 2008 Princeton crew season will open this weekend, and local fans can see the Tiger open women and men's heavyweights on Lake Carnegie Saturday morning. The men's lightweights will compete for the Joe Murtaugh Cup at Navy, while the women's lightweights went west to compete in the Windermere Cup. Saturday's home schedule can be found here.
The No. 6 Princeton open women will begin the home racing season by taking on No. 3 Brown and No. 22 Michigan State Saturday morning in a showdown for The Brown/Princeton Trophy. Tiger head coach Lori Dauphiny has a mix of youth and experience in her varsity eight, which will be put to the test early against the talented Brown squad. The third varsity B competition will open the regatta at 9 a.m.
The men's heavyweights will follow by taking on Georgetown at 1 p.m. Head coach Curtis Jordan's team is coming off berths in the grand finals of both Eastern Sprints and IRAs, despite losing the majority of the magical 2006 boat. Princeton did not compete against the Hoyas last year.
The men's lightweights take on the Naval Academy at 7:20 a.m. on the Severn River. Princeton and Navy split a pair of major fall races; the Tigers were the top collegiate finisher at the prestigious Head of the Charles, while Navy came back with a win at the Princeton Chase one week later. The race is for the Joe Murtaugh Cup, named after the longtime head Princeton lightweight coach. Murtaugh coached both Princeton head coach Greg Hughes and Navy coach Rob Friedrich, which Friedrich was on the national team.
Paul Rassam's women's lightweights traveled to Redwood Shores, Calif., to compete in the Windermere Cup. Princeton finished second at both Easterns and IRAs next year, and with a strong lineup returning, the Tigers are looking to return to the top of the medal stand this season.
