Richmond Up Next for Princeton Baseball

The Princeton baseball team takes its second trip of the 2008 season on Saturday when it visits Richmond for a three-game series this weekend. The Princeton offense came alive in last weekend's four-game series at Delaware as Princeton went 3-1, scoring 44 runs in four games and batting .351 as a team.
It was a good first weekend all around as nine Tiger batters are currently hitting .300 or above. Sophomore catcher Jack Murphy led the hit parade as he batted .462 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in the series. He had six hits over the weekend and hit one home run in each of the games played. Junior Derek Beckman had the highest batting average for the Tigers as he hit .571 with eight hits and three doubles.
Junior Adrian Turnham who hit .429 with a home run, senior Spencer Lucian who batted .417 with two doubles and four stolen bases and junior Dan DeGeorge who drove in seven runs and had three doubles, all turned in impressive performances as well.
On the mound, the Tigers got strong performances from several pitchers. Senior Steven Miller pitched five innings and got a win in Saturday's second game. He allowed a single earned run and struck out 10 batters. Freshman Matt Welsh allowed one run in four innings of relief on Sunday to also pick up a win and senior Christian Staehely allowed one earned run in four innings and left the first game with a lead. Also, freshman David Palms pitched a scoreless 3.1 innings to pick up a win on Sunday.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday at Richmond against a 4-6-1 Spider squad. Richmond played twice during the week, losing at Longwood 3-2 on Tuesday and defeating George Mason 13-8 on Wednesday. Richmond's other wins this season have come against Seton Hall and UNC-Wilmington.

Princeton and Richmond have met 16 times with a Spiders holding a 5-11 edge and all 16 meetings have come at Richmond. The teams did not play last season but met the two previous seasons. In 2005, Richmond swept a doubleheader from the Tigers and in 2006, Princeton went 2-1 in a three-game series.
