Schaus Gets 700th K as Softball Takes One of Three at UNC Tournament
March 09, 2008 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Kristen Schaus struck out 22 batters in 15 innings over two appearances for the Princeton softball team as the Tigers (2-5) won one of three games North Carolina's Tar Heel Invitational.
Schaus (1-4) earned the milestone in a 15-strikeout performance against South Carolina-Upstate, but the Spartans scored four eight-inning runs to take Sunday's finale 6-2.
With the 22 Ks, Schaus pushed her career total to 708, behind only the 819 strikeouts of former teammate Erin Snyder '06.
The Tigers twice closed one-run leads to send the game to extra innings against the Spartans. After an unearned run scored in the top of the fourth to put Princeton behind, Jamie Lettire's two-out home run in the bottom half of the inning tied it.
Princeton fell behind again in the fifth as USC-Upstate manufactured a run, but Collette Abbott's home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh tied it again at 2-2.
The Spartans scored four runs on two hits, an error and two hit batters in the top of the eighth for the 6-2 final.
Earlier Sunday, Princeton picked up a 7-2 win over Lafayette. Michelle Tolfa (1-0) picked up her first career win in the circle with the help of Lettire, who threw the last two innings to close it out.
Kelsey Quist gave Princeton its first run on a first-inning RBI-double before Princeton pushed it to 3-0 on Quist's two-run home run in the third.
Princeton's lead became 4-0 in the fifth when Brianna Moreno scored on the help of a two-base throwing error, but the Leopards halved the deficit on a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
Megan Weidrick's first career home run gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead in the sixth, and Lettire blased a two-run shot in the seventh for the 7-2 final.
The Tigers were due to play two games Friday, two more Saturday and a final game Sunday before weather intervened. In Princeton's only game Saturday, the Tigers fell to James Madison 3-0.
Schaus struck out seven in her complete-game effort, but the Dukes picked up two runs on a fourth-inning home run and added its final run in the fifth on an RBI-single.
Princeton will embark Thursday on its annual spring break trip, heading to Northern California for 13 games in 10 days between tournaments in Sacramento and at Stanford and a twinbill at Pacific.
