Softball Sweeps Columbia, Enjoys First 10-0 Ivy Start Since '95

NEW YORK -- Princeton's first run-rule victory of the season in the opener and a pair of strong pitching performances propelled the Princeton softball team to 14-2 and 5-0 wins over Columbia Saturday in Manhattan.
The sweep moves Princeton, 13-19 overall, to 10-0 in the Ivy League for the first time since 1995. Columbia falls to 3-7 in Ivy League play and 12-21 overall.
Game 1: Princeton 14, Columbia 1 (5 inn.)
Princeton exploded for a season-high 14 runs in the opener against Columbia, hitting three home runs in a 14-1, run-rule shortened win in Saturday's opener.
Kristen Schaus (5-13) gave up five hits in the complete-game effort, striking out five and earning one of Columbia's two runs.
Megan Weidrick's first-inning home run accounted for two of Princeton's three runs in the opening frame. Kathryn Welch fllowed it with a three-run blast in the second, and Brittney Scott powered her first collegiate home run in the third, a two-run shot that helped Princeton to a 9-0 lead.
Columbia scored its first run in the bottom of the third, but the game was never out of run-rule range once the Tigers reached the requisite eight-run lead in the top half of the inning.
The Tigers went down in order in the fourth but made up for it in the fifth. Beth Dalmut's RBI-double was the first of five runs in the inning. Brianna Moreno had a two-run single that immediately preceeded Weidrick's two-run base knock that gave the rookie third baseman a game-high four RBI in the opener.
Game 2: Princeton 5, Columbia 0
Michelle Tolfa retired the first 11 batters she faced as the Tigers completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-0 win.
Tolfa (5-3) gave up just three hits, striking out three in the complete-game shutout.
Princeton pushed its first run across in the second inning when Dalmut cashed in a Jamie Lettire leadoff single. Kelsey Quist's first of two home runs on the game brought home two more runs in the third, and a Weidrick sacrifice fly made it 4-0 in the fourth.
Quist's fifth-inning leadoff solo shot, her 10th home run of the season, gave the Tigers a 5-0 lead.
The Tigers will return to Columbia for a Sunday doubleheader at 12:30 to close out the first weekend of Ivy South play.
