Softball Improves to 12-0 in Ivies with Four-Game Sweep at Columbia
April 13, 2008 | Softball
NEW YORK -- Princeton tagged Columbia pitchers for six more home runs in Sunday's doubleheader as the Tiger softball team completed a four-game sweep of the Lions with 13-1 and 5-0 wins.
Princeton moves to 12-0 in Ivy League play for the second time in its history and first since its perfect Ivy season in 1995. Cornell was on track to keep Princeton's division lead at one game when the Tigers' game ended Sunday afternoon as it led Penn in the nightcap after winning game one in extra innings Sunday.
The possible sweeps eliminated Columbia from contention at nine games back with eight to play, while Cornell would push Penn to the brink if it completes the weekend sweep. Penn would be seven games back with eight to play.
Game 1: Princeton 13, Columbia 1 (5 inn.)
A 10-run fifth inning broke open what was a tight opener and helped the Tigers to a 13-1 win over Columbia. And while the offense was thumping out 14 hits, Kristen Schaus limited the Lions to only one in the circle for the Orange and Black.
Princeton sent 15 batters to the plate and had nine hits in the 10-run fifth. Five of those hits, along with two walks, came with two out. Kelsey Quist hit a two-run home run in the frame, her 11th on the season, and Megan Weidrick and Collette Abbott also had two-RBI hits during the deluge.
The Tigers hit four home runs in the game, with back-to-back first-inning solo shots from Weidrick and Kathryn Welch accounting for Princeton's first two runs. Kristin Arguedas had her first collegiate home run in the fourth inning, giving Princeton a 3-1 lead.
Schaus' (6-13) only hit allowed was a leadoff home run in the second inning by Ciji Rich that snuck over the left field fence. Columbia had just three other baserunners, and none aside from Rich's home run got past second base. Schaus struck out eight, moving her to 789 for her career. She needs 30 to tie former teammate Erin Snyder '06 (819) for the school's career record.
Game 2: Princeton 5, Columbia 0
Michelle Tolfa and Jamie Lettire combined to shut out Columbia and complete the four-game sweep with a 5-0 win.
Tolfa allowed only two hits in three innings while Lettire (4-3) completed it by allowing just one hit over the last four frames.
Princeton got all its runs in the second and third innings. Abbott and Beth Dalmut each had RBI-singles in the second inning, and Welch's two-run home run in the third preceeded Lettire's solo shot for the last Tiger run.
The 11 home runs moved Princeton as a team to 37 round-trippers on the year, one short of the team record of 38 set in 2005.
Princeton will travel to Villanova for a Thursday afternoon doubleheader before hosting Penn for a four-game set next weekend.
