Princeton Golf Teams Prep for Ivy League Championships This Weekend
April 16, 2008 | Men's Golf, Women's Golf
PRINCETON ? The Princeton golf teams will travel to the Atlantic City area this weekend looking to hit the jackpot on the links at their respective Ivy League Championship tournaments.
Both tournaments will play two rounds Saturday and one round Sunday. The men will be at Galloway National Golf Club while the women will play at Atlantic City Country Club 10 miles south.
The Galloway course plays a par-71 with a distance of 6,901 yards from the furthest tees. Atlantic City Country Club's course is a par-70 with a top distance of 5,349 yards.
Both Princeton programs have historically been successful at the Ivy championships. The event began on the men's side in 1975 when the Ivy held its own championship instead of sending its teams to the Eastern Intercollegiate Tournament. Since the Ivy tournament began, Princeton has won 19 titles and six of the last eight. Only a Yale win in 2003 and Penn last year have kept the Princeton men from being perfect for the 21st century.
The women's championship began in 1997. Princeton has won four Ivy titles (1999, 2001, 2004, 2005) and Yale had won the other six until last season, when Columbia became the first team aside from Princeton and Yale to win the title.
Both programs have seen all of their Ivy rivals at some point this season. The men's team has faced other Ivy teams in four tournaments this season, most recently finishing ahead of all three that competed in last weekend's Princeton Invitational in Columbia, Cornell and Penn.
The women hosted all six other Ivy programs in their fall home invitational, sweeping the field. The theme continued when Princeton finished ahead of all three Ivies in Georgetown's field this spring, but Yale and Harvard got the better of Princeton in last weekend's Roar-EE Invitational hosted by Columbia. The Tigers still finished ahead of Brown and host Columbia last weekend.
Junior Susannah Aboff has led or co-led the women's team at all eight tournaments between the fall and spring seasons. She has won three individual titles and has helped Princeton to three tournament titles. Aboff will seek to become Princeton's third individual to win an Ivy title and first since Avery Kiser won three straight from 2002-04. Mary Moan (1997) and Julia Allison (1999, 2001) have also won Ivy titles.
Four Tiger men have led the team at tournaments during the season as Juan Pablo Candela, Andrew Maliniak, Max Schechter and Evan Harmeling have had top-Tiger honors in 2007-08.
