Princeton Swept by Penn in Baseball

The Princeton baseball team dropped both ends of an Ivy League doubleheader to Penn on Sunday afternoon, falling by scores of 10-7 and 5-4. Juniors Derek Beckman and Adrian Turnham led the Tigers with three hits each on the afternoon.
Game 1
Princeton fell behind 8-0 in the second inning of the opening game and couldn't recover as Penn took the game by a 10-7 score. The Quakers sent 11 players to the plate in the inning as several well placed singles helped contribute to the big inning.
Penn made its lead 9-0 in the third inning before the Tigers got their first run in the third on when Turnham singled home freshman Matt Connor. Princeton closed the final gap with six runs over the final two innings but could not overcome the big deficit.
In the sixth, the Tigers pushed across five runs as senior Micah Kaplan singled in a run and sophomore Jon Broscious hit a two-run homer. Connor also plated a run with a sac fly. An inning later, sophomore Jack Murphy got Princeton's final run of the game with a solo homer.
Penn's Paul Cusick got the win while sophomore David Hale took the loss for Princeton.
Game 2
Penn jumped out early in the second game, but Princeton evened things in the seventh before Penn regained the lead on Dan Williams' two-run homer in the eighth inning.
The Quakers got off to fast start scoring three times in the top of the first inning as Mike Mariano's ground-rule double scored two runs and Tom Grandieri had an RBI-groundout. Princeton got one run back in the second when Hale hit a solo homer to right center.
The score stayed at 3-1 for the next four innings until Princeton pushed two runs across in the seventh to tie the game. With two outs, a double from junior Dan DeGeorge plated Beckman and then DeGeorge scored on a Turnham single.
Tied at 3-3, Penn promptly regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning as Kyle Armeny led off the inning with a double and Williams followed with the home run to right field.
In the bottom of the inning, Princeton threatened as Beckman and DeGeorge were both hit by pitches. Beckman scored on a Murphy single, which also pushed DeGeorge to third with an out, but the Tigers could get no closer as Penn held on for the 5-4 win.
Freshman Dan Barnes took the loss in relief while Andy Console got the win for Penn. Senior Steven Miller pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.

Princeton is now three games back with four remaining to be played. Princeton plays at St. John's Tuesday night in non-league action.
