Softball to Visit Lehigh for Single Game Tuesday

PRINCETON ? The Princeton softball team will travel to Lehigh for a 3:30 p.m. single game Tuesday, its final non-league game of the regular season as it sharpens up for an effective “best-of-five” with Cornell this weekend.
Princeton has won 17 of its last 20 games after enduring a 10-game spring-break losing streak. During the successful run, Princeton started 14-0 in Ivy League play before splitting a Sunday doubleheader with Penn.
Despite the sterling Ivy record, the one loss cost Princeton a solo hold on the Ivy South lead. Cornell, which lost a game to Harvard earlier this month, has since won 14 straight Ivy games to stand with the Tigers at 15-1.
The teams will play four games, two Friday in Ithaca and two Sunday in Princeton. If each team wins two, a divisional playoff will take place at Princeton on a date to be determined following the weekend.
But before the Tigers get there, Princeton will have to deal with a Lehigh team with postseason designs of its own. The Mountain Hawks are 31-13-1 overall and 11-5 in the Patriot League, one game back of rival Lafayette with a league-ending four-game set against Colgate this weekend.
Princeton holds a 28-6 record over Lehigh in a series that began in 1985. The teams played mostly annually until 1995, but not again until 2003. In the five seasons from 2003-07, Princeton and Lehigh met 14 times, including once in the postseason in 2005. The Tigers won that meeting and have a 9-5 record in the series' more recent run. In Bethlehem, Princeton has won two of the three games in that stretch, sweeping a doubleheader in 2004 and losing a single game in 2006.
Lehigh has compiled some impressive statistics this season and none more impressive than the dual threat posed by junior righthander Lisa Sweeney. One of seven Mountain Hawks batting over .300, Sweeney leads the team with a .406 average and has hit 11 of the team's 22 home runs. In the circle, Sweeney has a 19-3 record and a 1.44 ERA. While not unheard of, Sweeney is the rare pitcher who has hit more home runs than she has given up, allowing only seven.
Princeton is hitting .274 as a team on the season and has powered a program-record 42 home runs. Rookie Kristin Arguedas hit both the record-tying and record-breaking home runs between Thursday's doubleheader at Villanova and Saturday's twinbill with Penn. Princeton hit three more against the Quakers, one each from Kathryn Welch, Jamie Lettire and Brittney Scott. The home runs by Welch and Lettire were the 10th for each, making them, along with teammate Kelsey Quist (11), three of five Tigers all-time to hit a double-digit number of home runs in a season. Coincidentally, the single-season (14) and career record holder (37) was also in attendance this weekend, as Melissa Finley '05 is a Penn assistant coach.
