Baseball Looks to Gain Ground in Final Weekend
April 24, 2008 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team enters the final weekend of the Ivy League baseball season with its back to the wall as it fights to keep its season going. The Tigers play four games with Cornell this weekend, but sit three games behind first-place Columbia in the Gehrig Division standings.
Princeton has split each weekend of Ivy League play this season to post an 8-8 mark in league play. The Tigers drew even with Columbia with two wins on April 12, but the Tigers are 2-4 in Ivy play since then, while Columbia has gone 5-1 to account for three-game swing.
The Tigers get to action first this weekend with a doubleheader scheduled on Friday afternoon in Ithaca. The Tigers and Big Red complete the series on Saturday at Clarke Field. Meanwhile, Columbia will take on Penn in a home-and-home series. The teams play on Saturday in New York and on Sunday in Philadelphia.
Last weekend, Princeton split its two games with Penn, sweeping Saturday's doubleheader and being swept on in Sunday's. Junior Brad Gemberling and senior Chrisitan Stahely each pitched complete game wins on Saturday as the Tigers took two. A day later, Penn jumped out to leads in both games and Princeton rallies weren't enough as the Quakers took two. Princeton visited St. John's on Tuesday night in non-conference action and took a 6-2 loss.
Senior Spencer Lucian's .420 average continues to lead the Tigers. He also has a team-high 55 hits and 11 doubles. Junior Jack Murphy ranks second with a .397 average and has hovered right at .400 all season long. He leads Princeton with 34 RBIs and is tied for the team lead in home runs with sophomore Jon Broscious with seven.
Gemberling pitched a complete game shutout last weekend to lower his ERA to 4.25, the tops of Princeton's starting rotation. He is 1-1 and has struck out 35 in 36 innings pitched. Sophomore David Hale comes next despite a tough outing against Penn last weekend. He is 2-4 with a 4.54 ERA and has 45 strikeouts. Staehely leads the team with five wins and has a 5.28 ERA.
Princeton faces a Cornell team this weekend that is 11-24 overall and 5-11 in the Ivy League. Cornell enters the weekend having won just once in its last eight games. In that span the Big Red were swept by Le Moyne and Siena and dropped three of four to Columbia. Cornell's five Ivy wins have come against Harvard (1), Penn (3) and Columbia (1).
The Big Red is led defensively by Nathan Ford, a .420 hitter with 27 RBIs and 20 extra-base hits. The team has three batters over .300 and hits .267 as a team. Matt Hill and Corey Pappel lead the Cornell pitching staff. Hill is 4-3 with a 4.01 ERA while Pappel is 2-4 with 5.53 ERA.
Last season the Tigers took three of four from Cornell, winning the first two games on the Friday at home by scores of 7-5 and 4-3. Two days later Princeton took the opener 7-5 before falling in the nightcap 8-7 in 10 innings.
