Jamie Lettire and Megan Weidrick Earn Ivy Weekly Softball Honors
April 29, 2008 | Softball
PRINCETON -- In recognition of their superior performances in Princeton's Ivy South division-clinching series last weekend, Jamie Lettire and Megan Weidrick have been honored by the Ivy League.
Lettire was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after hitting the go-ahead home run in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader against Cornell and the game-winning homer in game two. The Tigers needed to sweep Cornell to avoid a one-game playoff with the Big Red for the division title. Lettire's first-game blast capped a six-run sixth-inning that helped Princeton to a 12-11 victory in a game the Tigers trailed 7-1 and 11-6. Princeton was behind by a run in the nightcap heading into the bottom of the seventh before Kathryn Welch and Lettire each homered. On top of the clutch home runs, Lettire also pitched Princeton to the series-clinching win in game two, keeping her Ivy record perfect at 6-0.
Lettire now has 13 home runs on the season, tied with Welch and Kelsey Quist for the team lead. Each is one home run short of the Princeton single-season record held by Melissa Finley '05. It is the second time this season, both in the month of April, that Lettire has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week. Welch won co-Player of the Week honors also in April.
Weidrick had five RBIs in Sunday's doubleheader including a three-run home run that brought Princeton within 7-6 in the opener. The rookie third baseman had a hit in each of the four games against the Big Red as the Tigers took three of four to clinch the division. Weidrick is Princeton's second rookie honoree this season after Kristin Arguedas won last month.
The Tigers (23-22, 18-2 Ivy) will host Harvard in the Ivy League Championship Series, a best-of-three, Saturday (doubleheader) and Sunday if necessary with both days starting at 12:30 p.m. The series winner gets the league's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
