Four Softball Tigers Named NFCA All-Region; Lettire, Quist, Welch First-Teamers

PRINCETON -- In recognition of outstanding numbers at the plate and an 18-2 run through the Ivy League to the NCAA tournament, Jamie Lettire, Kelsey Quist and Kathryn Welch have been named first-team All-Northeast Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Kristen Schaus was named to the second-team All-Region.
The honors are the first for any of the four Tigers. The last time Princeton had an NFCA all-region first-teamer was 2005, when pitcher Erin Snyder '06 received the honor. She followed it up with a second-team appearance in 2006.
Sophomores Quist (.358 BA) and Lettire (.352) and junior Welch (.345) combined for 40 of the team's program-record 53 home runs. Welch and Quist had 13 while Lettire tied the program single-season record with 14. Prior to this season, only two Tigers had hit as many as 10 home runs in a season (Melissa Finley '05, 14 in 2003 and Kristin Del Calvo '04, 12 in 2002); in 2008, three Tigers did so in the same year.
All three were first-team All-Ivy honorees this year along with Schaus, who claimed Ivy League Pitcher of the Year honors in her senior season. Schaus was 10-15 with a 4.06 ERA in a season that saw her rebound from a 1-11 start to win seven of eight Ivy League decisions.
The four Tigers will lead the team into the NCAA Amherst Regional this weekend hosted by Massachusetts. Princeton will open with the host Minutewomen Friday at 5 p.m. before meeting either Stanford or Lehigh Saturday.
