Women?s Soccer Update: Incoming Class Announcement, Fall Schedule and Offseason Happenings
May 09, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Princeton head women's soccer coach Julie Shackford has announced a seven-member incoming freshman class as part of an eventful spring for the Tigers.
Alissa Boddie (Presentation/San Jose, Calif.), Lauren Brown (Menlo School, Atherton, Calif.), Sara Chehrehsa (Leland/San Jose, Calif.), Kim Menafra (Jackson Memorial/Jackson, N.J.), Kalie Bartholomew (Episcopal/Jacksonville, Fla.), Barb Previ (Medford/Medford, N.J.) and Kristin Watson (Horizon/Scottsdale, Ariz.) have been admitted to Princeton and will join the team in the fall.
Bartholomew, a state and regional ODP player who played club soccer for the Jacksonville Fury, earned Florida Times Union first-team All-First Coast honors her junior and senior seasons. “Kalie is a forward with great speed and athleticism,” Shackford says. “She has the ability to break down defenses and her quiet intensity was evident both during her time at camp and and in the recruiting process.”
Boddie will join rising senior Taylor Numann as alumnae of Presentation High in San Jose. Boddie earned first-team all-area honors from the San Jose Mercury News and was on the first-team All-West Catholic Athletic League. A three-year state Olympic Development Program player and Region IV ODP camp attendee, “Alissa is an outside midfielder with a great work ethic and has the ability to beat people on the dribble,” says Shackford.
Brown, who played on the same club team as Boddie and Chehrehsa, the Mountain View-Los Altos Mercury, trained with the U-15 and U-16 national team and was a part of the Region IV and Cal North ODP teams. Brown, a defender, endured and ACL injury in 2006 before rebounding to be named her school's MVP last season. “She is as athletic and as versatile as any back we have come across in this year's pool of student athletes,” Shackford says.
Chehrehsa, who scored 42 goals and had 26 assists in three seasons of varsity soccer at Leland High in San Jose, Calif., won first-team all-league honors all three seasons and was named a San Jose Mercury News first-team all-area player as a senior. Chehrehsa has also played for the Cal North ODP team for four years and was part of the 2007-09 ODP regional pool. “Sara is a dynamic central midfielder or forward who plays for one of the most competitive teams in the country (MVLA Mercury). She is small but quick and crafty with the ball,” Shackford says.
Menafra, who will stay in central New Jersey for her college career, was a state ODP player last year and won first-team divisional accolades from the Asbury Park Press as a freshman and senior. Also a talented hurdler on the Jackson High track and field team, Menafra “is an athletic, skillful and hard-nosed defender,” Shackford says. “She is extremely hard working and has a real blue-collar mentality in her approach to the game.”
Previ, who will also play lacrosse at Princeton, is a two-time NSCAA high school All-America who won first-team honors at the conference, county, South Jersey and state high school group level since her sophomore season. The New Jersey Girls Soccer Association also named her a three-time first-teamer as well as a top-20 player in the South Jersey region. The organization tabbed Previ twice as a top-20 all-state player twice. Her high school team's leading scorer all four seasons, Previ earned state and regional honors from adidas and the NSCAA in addition to the All-America awards. Previ was also a five-year state ODP player. Previ “can play anywhere on the field," Shackford says.
Watson, a 6-1 goalkeeper, helped her Sereno club team to seven state titles over the decade, along with regional tournament runs from 2004-06. The club team won a Surf Cup title in 2006. “She has a great presence and fantastic kicking game,” says Shackford.
Shackford also unveiled the team's fall 2008 schedule. Princeton will have nine of its 17 games at home, opening the new Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium on Sept. 5 against Boston University as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The official dedication ceremony of the new stadium will occur Oct. 4 in the first Ivy home game against Dartmouth, also a men's doubleheader. Towson, Fairfield, Brown, Lehigh, Harvard, Bucknell and Penn complete Princeton's home schedule.
The road schedule begins at Hofstra Sept. 7, followed by a Texas two-step to Texas A&M Sept. 12 and Rice Sept. 14. Road games at St. John's, Yale, American, Columbia and Cornell will follow.
Rising sophomore Alexandra Valerio joined the Portugese national U-19 team as it attempted to qualify for the UEFA European U-20 championships in France in July. Portugal hosted Italy, Norway and Ukraine over the past week. Italy and Norway both topped the Portugese before Ukraine and Portugal played to a draw in the last of the three matches. The Italians and Norwegians advanced out of the group.
The Tigers played their annual spring contests in April, tying Seton Hall 0-0 on April 12 two weekends before besting Columbia 4-0 and tying St. John's 0-0.
The team announced its 2008 captains with seniors Lisa Chinn and Jen Om and junior Melissa Seitz getting the honors.
Just before holding its annual banquet Sunday, April 27, Shackford was on hand as Kathryn Hamm '91 announced an endowed award named in honor of her late teammate, Kathy Kobler “Kobes” Garrett '91, an outstanding two-sport varsity athlete and team leader. It will be presented to that member of the Princeton varsity soccer or softball teams whose generosity, positive attitude, genuine consideration for others and quiet leadership make her essential to the success of the team.
Later that day at the team banquet, Diana Matheson was named the team's most valuable player while Melissa Whitley earned most improved honors and Chinn won the Don Betterton Unsung Hero Award.
Soon-to-be graduate Regina Yang coordinated a Princeton soccer contingent in a 5K “Justice Run” April 19 on the cross country course at West Windsor Fields to raise funds and awareness for social causes in Uganda and India. More than 175 people competed in the event, including soccer's Yang, Lisa Chinn, Aly Pont, Jen Om, Jillian Hewitt, Marissa Sampias, Lauren Whatley, Kayleigh Iatarola, Vicki Anagnostopoulos, Bernie Da Costa and Taylor Numann.
