Three Incoming Freshmen to Join Princeton Softball for 2008-09
July 01, 2008 | Softball
PRINCETON ? Princeton head softball coach Trina Salcido has announced an incoming class of three freshmen to join a program that has won five of the last seven Ivy League titles, including recapturing the Ivy crown in 2008.
Kirsti Buchholz (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier), Nicole Ontiveros (Santa Margarita/Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Kelsey VandeBergh (Jesuit/Beaverton, Ore.) will join 11 returners for the 2009 season.
“We are extremely excited for the arrival of our talented incoming class,” Salcido said. “We expect them to make an immediate impact and continue the success of Princeton softball. The versatility of Kirsti, Nicole and Kelsey will bring more speed, power and athleticism to our already talented squad.”
Buchholz, a hitting pitcher, comes from the same high school as recently graduated pitcher Kristen Schaus, a four-time All-Ivy Leaguer and the reigning Ivy League Pitcher of the Year. Buchholz compiled a 46-12 record with an 0.84 ERA and 523 strikeouts during her high school career while also hitting .323. The recipient of multiple all-area and all-conference honors, Buchholz was named to the Florida Class 5A all-state second team as a senior.
Ontiveros, an outfielder, won a national title with her 18-Gold ASA club team, the Worth Firecrackers, and a league title at Santa Margarita High. One of four natives of Orange County, Calif., on next year's Princeton softball team, Ontiveros was her team's offensive player of the year, a four-time all-league player and a California all-senior all-star team member.
VandeBergh, a utility player, hit .449 as a senior to help lead her team to a league title and a third-place finish at the Oregon state tournament. VandeBergh received first-team all-state and all-league accolades as a senior while being named the team's most valuable player on offense. A three-time all-league honoree, VandeBergh also hit .414 her sophomore season.
The Tigers will be looking to fill the roles left by graduated seniors Schaus and Beth Dalmut, who played infield and outfield positions during most of her career but became Princeton's starting catcher in 2008. Princeton returns its entire infield and outfield plus two of its three pitchers, including Ivy League Co-Player of the Year and NFCA Third-Team All-America pitcher/first baseman Jamie Lettire.
