Current And Future Princeton Rowers Selected To Junior World Championship Rosters
July 11, 2008 | Women's Rowing - Open
Rowers Emily Reynolds '11, Andrew Lewis '12, Ian Silveira '12 and Gianthomas Volpe '12 have been selected to compete in the 2008 Junior World Championships, held July 22-27 in Linz, Austria. Reynolds will row in the six seat of the U.S. women's 8+, Silveira will stroke the men's 8+ for the second straight year and Lewis will stroke the men's 4+. Volpe will row for the Italian men's 8+.
Reynolds (Washington, Conn./The Kent School) was a standout rower at Kent and was one of three freshmen to row in the Princeton open varsity eight by the end of the 2008 season. A rising sophomore, she will be one of two oarswomen in the U.S. women's 8+ with valuable collegiate experience, a rarity at the Junior World Championships.
Silveira (West
Bloomfield, Mich./St. Mary's Prep), who will compete for the
heavyweights next season, will look to improve on the men's 8+
fifth-place finish at the 2007 Worlds in Beijing. Silveira is coming
off of an excellent 2008 high school season, leading St. Mary's Prep to
a fifth-place finish at the Scholastic Nationals in Oak Ridge, Tenn.,
and capturing the national championship in the men's single at the
USRowing Youth Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Lewis (Princeton Junction, N.J./St. Paul's School (N.H.)), another heavyweight recruit, is a local product that started his rowing career for the Mercer Junior Rowing Club in nearby West Windsor. He rowed in the St. Paul's varsity eight for four years and captained the team his senior year. As the stroke of the men's 4+, Lewis hopes to improve on the U.S. team's seventh place finish last year.
Volpe (Naples,
Italy), who will join the men's lightweight squad next season, was
recently named to the Italian men's 8+. This is Volpe's first year on
his country's 8+, which finished fourth at the 2007 Championships.
