Schneider Scores for Princeton in One Goal Loss to American
September 12, 2008 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/12/08) ? Sophomore Teddy Schneider scored his first goal of the season, in the 75th minute for the Princeton University men's soccer team but the Tigers couldn't get the equalizer on a rainy night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, as Princeton fell to American, 2-1.
The Tigers' offense had some good looks in the early going, as junior Devin Muntz had a shot in the opening five minutes. A series of chances followed, including two free kicks in the attacking third, one of which just cleared the cross bar. Freshman Antoine Hoppenot had his sights set on the net but the timing was off as the officials signaled an offside.
American's Nidhal Charfi tested Princeton's goalkeeper Joe Walter twice near the end of the first half. His first shot with roughly 10 minutes remaining, nailed the post and went out of bounds. His second shot just three minutes later, was turned away by Walter.
A few minutes later, at 43:17, Jamie Davin and Daniel Shannon teamed up to give American the 1-0 lead. Daven had shot saved on the far side of the field, as Walter came out to the corner of the box to stop the shot. He couldn't collect the wet ball as it went back out onto the field where Shannon knocked in the rebound from inside the 18-yard box before Walter could get back into position on the slippery grass.
Shannon added his second goal of the game at 66:31 with help from Cameron Petty as the ball slipped through the hands of Walter.
Both team had its chances early in the second half, before Princeton started to take over. At 74:43, the hard work paid off as junior Ben Harms found Schneider open out in front, and Schneider nailed the ball past the keeper. Sophomore Brandon Busch also earned an assist as he sent the ball into play from the left side.
Schneider had a chance to even the game at the one-minute mark, after a great pass from Ben Burton, but Schneider's shot went high.
Princeton had a 13-10 advantage in shots, which included an 8-4 edge in the second half. The Tigers also led the way on corner kicks with seven, all of which came in the second half, to the Eagles' four.
Walter finished the night with three saves, while American's Matt Makowski stopped two.
Princeton (0-2) hosts Seton Hall on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 2:30 p.m., in the final game of the Princeton Invitational. Early this evening, it was Penn defeating Seton Hall, 2-0.
