Men's Soccer Scores Three in the Second Half in Win Over Seton Hall
September 14, 2008 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (9/14/08) – The Princeton University men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half to defeat Seton Hall University, 3-1, on Sunday, Sept. 14 at Myslik Field at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
With the 90 degree heat and high humidity, head coach Jim Barlow kept the Tigers fresh with numerous substitutions.
Princeton came out with a mission, to pick up its first win, and it was obvious from the get go. The offense dominated the first half, taking seven shots to Seton Hall's two. The Tigers had a series of chances, including three near misses by freshman Antoine Hoppenot.
One minute after he had header in the 5th minute, Hoppenot tried put away a feed from sophomore Teddy Schneider but the goalkeeper pushed the ball outside of the post to keep the slate clean.
Ten minutes later, Hoppenot picked up a pass from Jason Adams on the left side and fired towards the goal. The ball ricchoted passed the goalkeeper and was rolling towards the goal line. Freshman Manny Sardinha and Seton Hall's Hayden Morris both charged the net but it was Morris that got to the ball and kicked it off the line.
The Tigers' defense was also solid, highlighted by the play of senior Matt Care, who took away a Seton Hall opportunity as he stole the ball away from an attacked player inside the 18-yard box and sent it back up the field.
In his first start of the 2008 season, sophomore goalkeeper Sean Lynch came up big for the Tigers in the 29th minute. Seton Hall had a man advantage as Dritan Sela passed to Steven Rose and Rose fired a shot towards the goal, but Lynch made a diving save despite a possible screen.
Two minutes into the second half, Seton Hall had a chance after Giovanni Zammiello shot far post and Samuel Petrone tried for the rebound, but he couldn't square his body with the defense smothering, and his shot went far wide.
Three minutes later, Princeton had a near goal of its own, when Hoppenot used some nifty footwork to flick the ball towards the goal but Sean Carr made the stop at the right side.
Senior Brad Fechter tallied his first goal of the season after he was received a great ball from sophomore Brandon Busch on the left side in front of the team bench. With lots of room in front of him and no defenders, he ran up the field and blasted a shot into the lower left corner at 59:27.
Seton Hall answered back at 66:49 after Marko Ciklic released a high shot from 30 yards out that tucked up and under the cross bar.
The Tigers regained the lead at 68:02 off a header from sophomore Josh Walburn. After a foul was called 35 yards out, junior Devin Muntz took the free kick and lofted the ball into the box where Walburn leaped up to head the ball into the net.
A minute later, Muntz took another free kick from almost the same exact location but Carr made a diving stop to collect the ball.
Schneider sealed the win with his second goal of the weekend, at 75:31, when he buried a shot from 20 yards out, chipping the keeper. Muntz was credited with the assist on the goal.
After the goal, the Seton Hall coaching staff replaced Carr with Michael Kuzan for the remainder of the contest.
Carr finished the game with four saves, while Kuzan made one stop in the final 13:36. Lynch made two saves for Princeton.
Princeton finished the game with 16 shots to Seton Hall's 12. The Tigers also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Princeton (1-2) travels to Illinois next weekend to take on two nationally-ranked squads, Northern Illinois and Northwestern.
