No. 9 Northwestern Slips by Princeton, 1-0
September 21, 2008 | Men's Soccer
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Princeton men's soccer team lost a close
1-0 game to No. 9-ranked Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 21 at Lakeside
Field in the final game of the Chicago Classic.
The Wildcats entered the game averaging 2.00 goals per game and 15.7
shots per game, but the Tigers were up to the task of shutting down the Wildcat's defense. Princeton limited Northwestern's scoring chances
while also creating some of its own. The squad was in position to take
an early lead after Northwestern was called for a foul at the top of
the box just two minutes into the game. Junior Devin Muntz took the
direct free kick but the ball was a tad too high and sailed over the
cross bar.
Neither team had many quality chances the remainder of the
half, as each squad finished the opening 45 minutes of play with eight
shots.
The Tigers came close to scoring again in the 56th minute when
senior Brad Fechter fired a shot towards the goal and banged off the
cross bar.
Northwestern however, was the squad that got on the scoreboard, tallying the deciding goal in the 60th minute.Tyler Voigt
created an opportunity at the right edge of the box and played the ball
in to Matt Eliason, who was able to create enough space to get off a
shot that beat Princeton goalkeeper Sean Lynch inside the left post.
Princeton created one more solid chance with under four minutes
left when sophomore Brandon Busch found himself alone on the far post, but his
shot missed just wide.
The Tigers outshot the Wildcats, 14-12, including a 6-4 differential
in the second half. Northwestern's Misha Rosenthal made two saves,
while Lynch had
five. Corner kicks were even at four apiece.
Princeton (1-4) will travel to Monmouth for a midweek game on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 3 p.m.
