Monmouth Takes 1-0 Overtime Game From Princeton Men's Soccer
September 25, 2008 | Men's Soccer
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (9/25/08) ? The Princeton University men's soccer team lost a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime game to Monmouth on Thursday, Sept. 25. The Hawks, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas national poll, scored 14 seconds into the extra session to win the game.
The first half started out slow with just three shots being taken, all of which were by Monmouth, but none on target. In the second half, there were nearly four times as many chances, with Princeton taking six shots to Monmouth's five.
Monmouth was quick to attack in overtime, as Ryan Kinne and Rob LaRocca both had shots, but senior goalkeeper Joe Walter came up with back-to-back saves. Following his shot, LaRocca found the ball loose in the box and sent it to Chase Barbieri, who one-timed the ball into the back of the net.
Walter finished the game with five saves, while Bryan Meredith stopped two shots for Monmouth. The Hawks out shot the Tigers, 11-6, and took nine corners while Princeton had eight.
Princeton (1-5) will face Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday, Sept. 28 in Teaneck, N.J.
