Seniors Star for Women's Soccer on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium's Opening Night
September 05, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON ? Sarah Peteraf and Lisa Chinn are two of a four-member senior class for the Princeton women's soccer team in 2008. As such, they'll be playing at the new Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium the least of anyone on the roster.
Friday night in a 2-1 win over Boston University to open the top-notch facility, Peteraf and Chinn began to make the most of that time.
Peteraf's 72nd-minute goal in which she got past two Terrier defenders and the keeper to score on an open net was the equalizer, and Chinn's tip-in off a crossing pass from sophomore Bernie Da Costa with 1:06 to play was the game-winner as the Tigers opened the season with a win for the first time since 2004.
“I saw the ball coming,” Chinn said of the pass from Da Costa from the right side across the goal mouth. “I saw the keeper was kind of near post. If I just hit it far post, it'll go through.”
It did, and the Tigers did their part to provide a fitting ending to a fine facility's opening night.
“I think we all felt a lot of pressure being the first game in a new stadium,” Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said after her 11th season-opening win in 14 seasons at Princeton. “I know I was really nervous. I'm proud of the win against a good team that's had three games under their belt.”
The match was also the first athletic event of the 2008-09 academic year at Princeton in addition to being the first competition at Roberts Stadium. Boston University coach Nancy Feldman, whose team had defeated Princeton in the first weekend of the Tigers' season in 2006 and 2007, walked away impressed with the facility.
“It's a first-class stadium, one of the most beautiful I've seen,” Feldman said. “It would be a great site for a College Cup if it were a little bigger.”
Roberts Stadium has seating for 2,356 fans on three sides with more accommodated via standing room. The minimum total for hosting a College Cup between temporary and permanent seats is 10,000.
Boston University, which has seen all four of its games this season decided by a single goal, had scored less than three minutes before Peteraf's equalizer when Farrell McClernon threaded a shot from the top of the 18-yard box under the crossbar and over sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Pont, who was making her first career start.
Peteraf took five of Princeton's 10 shots. Boston University outshot Princeton 11-10 and out-cornered the Tigers 8-6.
“Sarah was a star today,” Shackford said. “I think that was her best game ever. That's a real goal for her, to push to be an impact player. She did a great job.”
The Tigers will look to continue their momentum Sunday morning with an 11:30 start at Hofstra.
