Junior Emery Maine Wins 2009 Constable Invitational
January 12, 2009 | Women's Squash
For the third straight year, a member of the Princeton Class of 2010 has won the Constable Invitational, one of the most prestigious individual competitions in women's college squash. Emery Maine defeated 2008 champion Amanda Siebert in three games to claim the crown.
Due to scheduling conflicts, the 2009 competition featured only Princeton competitors, while in past years, top programs like Trinity and Penn have been involved. Regardless, Princeton head coach Gail Ramsay believed it would be good competition for her players, especially with the heart of the season rolling around. Fourteen players were involved -- 2007 champion Neha Kumar was out with an injury -- and after two days of competitive matches, the final came down to the top two players, Siebert and Maine.
Maine, who clinched the national team championship last year with the decisive win over Penn, found a way to pull out three close games in a 9-7, 9-7, 10-8 victory. "They were three very close games that could have gone either way," Ramsay said. "Emery had one of her best performances to date. She made very few errors and made great shot selections at critical times. It was good to see her work pay off. Amanda also played well, but she struggled to keep Emery under enough enough pressure to force open balls."
Kaitlin Sennatt defeated Jackie Moss for third place. With the individual competition finished, Princeton will now focus again on going for its third straight national team title, as well as a second Ivy League crown in three seasons. The regular season resumes Wednesday, Jan. 28, when No. 1 Princeton hosts No. 2 Penn at the Jadwin Squash Courts (5:30 p.m.). The winner of this match has won the Ivy League title each of the last two seasons.
