Men's Swimming/Diving In Tight Battle During Annual HYP Weekend
January 31, 2009 | Men's Swimming and Diving
Super Sunday may mean something different to most of the country, but the annual HYP men's swimming and diving competition appears headed for a thrilling finish Sunday. Harvard currently leads Princeton 96-90, while the Tigers lead Yale 132-54.
Princeton opened the meet by winning the 200 free relay, as the team of Geoff Faux, Doug Lennox, Matt LaMonaca and Mike Carter recorded an NCAA B-cut time of 1:19.11. The first individual event of the day, the 200 free, went to Harvard's David Guernsey (1:36.16), but Princeton did go 3-4-5; junior Jonathan Hartmann took third in 1:37.02, followed by freshman Colin Cordes (1:38.50) and junior A.J. Kennedy (1:38.56).
Yale's All-Ivy senior Alex Righi won the 100 back in 47.69, while Lennox took third in 48.85. Princeton followed with a 1-2 finish in the 100 breast, as seniors Easton Chen (55.42) and Will Schaffer (55.79) topped the field. Schaffer would come back later in the evening to win the 200 IM in 1:48.39; in that event, sophomore teammate Colin Hanna added a second-place finish in 1:49.25.
Another Tiger senior posted a big effort in the 200 fly, as Dan Eckel topped a trio of Crimson swimmers to the wall with a B-cut time of 1:44.08. Sophomore Brett Lullo followed with a fifth-place finish in 1:49.39.
Righi won the 50 free in 20.12, but Princeton finished 3-4-5-6 in the event. Carter finished third in 20.24, followed by LaMonaca (20.31), Faux (20.47) and Cordes (20.62). While that was the quickest event of the meet, the longest (1650 free) went to Harvard's Alex Meyer in 15:00.13. Princeton had three in the top six, led by senior tri-captain Robert Griest, who took third in 15:13.24; freshman Travis McNamara (15:20.56) and sophomore Patrick Biggs (15:24.83) finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the 1-meter diving competition, Princeton junior Dan Dickerson placed third with 256.60 points, while senior Yarden Fraiman scored 249.85 points. The evening concluded with the 400 medley relay, which Princeton finished second and third in. The Tiger foursome of AJ Kennedy, Jonathan Christensen, Michael Monovoukas and Colin Cordes took second in 3:17.47, while the team of Charlie Wang, Chen, Eckel and Hartmann took third in 3:18.77.
