Allgood's Double-Double Powers Princeton Past Rider
January 06, 2009 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/6/09) - Freshman Devona Allgood recorded her first career double-double to lead the Princeton women's basketball team to a 68-54 win over Rider on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at Jadwin Gym. Allgood scored 12 points and pulled down 16 boards as the Tigers ended a winless streak in their final non-conference game of the season.
Allgood wasn't the only Tiger in double digits in scoring, as sophomore Krystal Hill and senior Julia Berger both had season highs with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore Addie Micir collected a team-high six assists, which matched her career-best.
"It was great to get a win," Coach Banghart said. "We've played well since mid-December and we came up empty, but the kids continued to believe. This was probably our weakest effort defensively, but we gritted it out and held the lead, which compared to the last game, shows immediate growth."
The win ends a five-game losing streak for Princeton as they enter league play on Saturday. "The players have bought into the process," Banghart said. "They saw they were getting better and weren't focused on results. Now it's January and we're focused on getting results."
Shaunice Parker led the Broncs with 12 points and nine boards. Amanda Sepulveda had 11 points with Ashley Anderson adding 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench. As a team, Rider shot 36.5 percent from the floor, 30.8 percent from behind the arc and 80 percent from the charity stripe.
The Tigers shot 43.3 percent for the game, had a 45.5 shooting percentage from long range and was 64.7 percent from the free throw line. Princeton also recorded three more rebounds than Rider, 38-35.
The Broncs opened the game on a 4-0 run, their only lead of the game. Princeton's answer was a 12-2 run to put the score at 12-6 five minutes into the game, and two minutes later it had an eight-point lead, 16-8. Rider started to slowly chip away at the Tigers' lead and used a 12-5 run to get to come within one point, 21-20 at 8:19. Princeton came on strong at the end of the half, scoring 13 points to Rider's five to grab a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Eight minutes into the second half, Princeton was out to a 17 point lead, 46-29, as senior Jessica Berry dropped in five of the Tigers' 12 points. Over the next six minutes, another Tiger took over in scoring, as Hill sank seven of the team's 14 points, setting the score at 60-43 with 6:05 to play. The teams traded baskets to close out the game in favor of Princeton.
The Tigers (5-9) begin Ivy League play on Saturday, Jan. 10, when they host Penn at 6 p.m.
