Princeton Hosts Penn in Ivy League Opener

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/8/09) - The Princeton women's basketball team begins its Ivy League schedule on Saturday, Jan. 10 when it hosts Penn at 6 p.m.

Princeton is 20-14 in Ivy League season openers since the Ivy League women's basketball schedule began in 1978-79. When playing Penn in the Ivy opener, Princeton is 10-4 and has won the last three openers againt the Quakers.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Penn, 41-23 since the teams
began playing each other in 1974. When playing at Jadwin, the Tigers
own a 20-10 record. Penn snapped a five-game losing steak in the series
when it took an 85-78 win on March 11. The Tigers won the first game,
69-57 on Jan. 12.
Princeton is coming off a 64-58 win over Rider from Tuesday which improves its record to 5-9. The squad is 4-1 when playing at Jadwin Gym. Sophomore Addie Micir is the team's leading scorer, with 12.4 points per game. She is shooting 40.5 percent from long range and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Freshman Lauren Edwards is contributing 9.2 points per game and senior Whitney Downs is adding 9.9 points per game. Downs leads the team in steals with 22, while Edwards has 20. Freshman Devona Allgood is the top rebounder with 6.3 boards per game. She also leads the team with 18 blocks.
Penn sports a 3-9 overall record and are 2-4 when playing away from the Palestra. The Quakers recorded a 61-58 loss versus La Salle on Monday, and fell to Temple, 81-70 last Friday. Carrie Biemer is the team's leading scorer, averaging 18.5 points per game and has a team-best 5.5 rebounds per game. Kelly Scott is contributing 11.8 points per game and is the Quakers' best free-throw shooter, nailing 85 percent of her shots. She along with Biemer are the team's best long range shooters with each player draining 23 on the season. Erin Power has a team-best 42 assists while Sarah Bucar leads the team in steals with 13.
Princeton and Penn have two common opponnents, in Patriot League teams Lehigh and Lafayette. Both teams played close matches with Lafayette. Penn lost in overtime, 59-55, while Princeton fell in the final minutes, 66-64. Penn lost to Lehigh by 31, while Princeton fell by 20.
