The 10th-ranked Princeton women's hockey team travels to the Capital District of New York this weekend looking to enter the exam break on a high note against Rensselaer and Union. Princeton broke into the Top 10 for the first time all year with last weekend's sweep at Harvard and Dartmouth.
Princeton has come on over the last few months, going 7-3-1 in its last 11 games with three wins over ranked teams, downing St. Lawrence, Minnesota-Duluth and Dartmouth in the span. The Tigers moved a game over .500 on the season with the win Sunday at Dartmouth and are also one game over .500 in league play at 6-5-0.
Last weekend the Tigers picked up its first sweep of the Harvard/Dartmouth travel pair on the road, although the two have only been travel partners since the 2005-06 season. Princeton last beat both teams on the road in the 1993-94 campaign and last swept the pair overall at home late in the 2005-06 season.
Princeton only needed one goal in a 1-0 shutout of Harvard as senior Kristen Young turned aside 31 Crimson shots. Freshman Heather Landry provided the goal as the Crimson saw their 27-game home-unbeaten streak end at the hands of the Tigers. Princeton completed the weekend with a 4-1 win at Dartmouth. After falling behind 1-0, the Tigers scored four unanswered goals in the win as sophomore Caroline Park's first goal of the season proved to be the game winner. Young stopped 26 shots in the win as her weekend performance helped her take ECAC Goaltender of the Week honors.
Princeton's four-point weekend lifted the Tigers into sole possession of fifth in the league standings with 12 points. Princeton sits four points behind first-place Dartmouth and two behind second-place Harvard. St. Lawrence and Rensselaer are currently tied in third, a point up on Princeton, but both teams have three games in hand on the Tigers, making this weekend's match up with the Engineers all the more important.
Princeton starts the weekend looking to avenge a home loss to Rensselaer from earlier this season. The Tigers did just that twice last weekend and will hope to do it again on Friday night. Princeton is 3-2 all-time against Rensselaer and is 1-1 against the Engineers in games played in Troy. The teams split their games in 2006-07 and Princeton swept the series last year. The Engineers took the first meeting of this season 3-2 at Princeton, scoring three straight goals after Princeton took a 1-0 lead on a goal from freshman Danielle DiCesare. Junior Melanie Wallace added a third period goal, but Princeton could not draw even.
Rensselaer is 11-6-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the ECAC. The Engineers have lost just twice in their last 14 games, going 10-2-2. RPI played two WCHA opponents last weekend, falling to North Dakota 3-2 in overtime and topping St. Cloud State 2-0 as part of the Easton Showcase at St. Cloud.
The Tigers complete the weekend at Union, looking to continue their perfect record against the Dutchwomen. Princeton is 11-0 all-time against Union and is 6-0 in games played in Schenectady. Princeton defeated Union 6-0 in early December as seniors Annie Greenwood and Christine Foster, and sophomore Laura Martindale, all recorded three points. Union is 2-16-2 overall and 0-8 in the ECAC. The Dutchwomen played to a loss and a tie in their last action in mid-December at Maine. Union's two wins came at Sacred Heart.
