October 15, 2009 | Men's Tennis
HANOVER, N.H. -- Princeton sophomore Yohei Shoji won two matches in the qualifying draw at the ITA Northeast Regional at Dartmouth Thursday, advancing to the main draw.
Shoji defeated the draw's No. 6 seed by winning two tiebreakers, topping Chris Albornoz of Army 7-6(4), 7-6(4). Soon after, Shoji still had enough to beat Alexander Centenari of Dartmouth 6-4, 6-4.
Those wins will allow Shoji to join Matija Pecotic, Matt Spindler, Ravi Yegya-Raman, Charlie Brosens and Matt Siow among the 96 players in the main draw beginning Friday. Pecotic, the No. 9 seed, has a first-round bye, while Siow will face a qualifier, Brosens will face Joe Goldstein of Connecticut, Yegya-Raman will meet Nicolas Pisecky of Marist, and No. 17 seed Spindler has a first-round bye. Shoji is slotted in against Evan Algier of Binghamton.
Also beginning Friday is the 56-team doubles draw. Princeton is down to two teams because of a withdrawal by Pecotic, who hopes to be ready for singles Saturday. Shoji and Siow will meet Pavel Cerny and Milo Hauk of St. John's to start, while Alex Faust and Ilya Trubov will face Akash Muppidi and Jonathan Schroeder of Boston College in their first match.
