MATTAPOISETT, Mass. -- Princeton split its first two matches on the first day of play at the Ivy League Match Play event at The Bay Club in Mattapoisett, Mass., setting up a fifth-place matchup with Dartmouth Sunday.
Yale got by Princeton 3-2 with Evan Harmeling and Chase Lovett-Woodsum winning their matches. In the first consolation match against Brown, which Princeton won 5-0, Patrick Wasserman, Juan Pablo Candela and Greg Stamas joined Harmeling and Lovett-Woodsum as winners.
In the other first-round matches, all with 3-2 finals, Columbia beat Brown, Harvard beat Dartmouth and Penn beat Cornell. That set up semifinal matches between Columbia and Yale, won by Yale, and Harvard and Penn, won by Penn. Sunday's first-place final will put Yale against Penn, with Columbia and Harvard playing for third.
On the other side of the bracket, the Dartmouth-Princeton winner will take fifth place, with Cornell and Brown playing for seventh.
