October 21, 2009 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/20/09) - The Princeton men's soccer team picked up its second straight win by a 3-0 score when it defeated Colgate on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The Tigers dominated the box score, outshooting Colgate 24-6 and allowing just one shot on goal to improve to 6-5-2 overall.
Princeton had its first opportunity 10 minutes into the game, when freshman defender Mark Linnville had a header hit the near post. Six minutes later freshman midfielder Lester Nare had a header after teammate Matt Sanner headed the ball into his direction but the shot was saved by the leaping goalkeeper, Grant Reed, who was making his collegiate debut.
The Tigers continued to pepper the net with Reed coming up with six saves in the first 35 minutes of the game.
In the 22nd minute, sophomore Manny Sardinha had a near miss after picking up a Brandon Busch corner kick, one of eight the Tigers would take in the game. Senior Devin Muntz also had a great shot when he launched a shot from 30 yards out but the ball was collected by the keeper.
Princeton nearly got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute, but a Colgate player came up big, making a team save to preserve the clean slate. Senior Ben Harms curved a corner kick from the far side of the field into the box where it was saved on the line by Colgate's Chris Ross.
Seven minutes later, Princeton would get its first goal of the night from sophomore striker Antoine Hoppenot. Junior Josh Walburn fed sophomore Colby Hahn on the right flank and Hahn sent a great ball up the field for a Hoppenot one-on-one opportunity that he was able to convert at 39:42.
Princeton continued to carry on offensively in the second and was able to get its second goal of the night off a free kick by Muntz at 63:57. Colgate was called for a foul about 20 yards out near the corner of the 18-yard box. Muntz took the free kick and it sailed into the back of the net.
Busch sealed the Tigers' win at 81:01 when he beat Reed one-on-one. Reed came off his line and was just outside of the six-meter box when he went down to stop Busch's shot. The ball brushed his hands and continued to roll towards the goal. The Raiders' defense suddenly jumped into action but by the time the two defenders got to the goal, the ball had trickled over the goal line.
Reed finished the night with an impressive 11 saves. Junior Sean Lynch earned the win in net for the Tigers but did not face a shot. Junior Thomas Gasparini went in on relief for the final 7:21 and made one save.
The Tigers will travel to Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 24 for a 1:30 p.m., kick off as the Ivy League season resumes.
