PRINCETON (10/2/09) -- The seventh-ranked Princeton field hockey team improved to 3-0 in the Ivy League with a 4-0 shutout of Columbia on Friday night at Class of '52 Stadium. Four different Tigers scored in the win.
Princeton controlled play from the onset and broke through for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute when freshman Julia Reinprecht collected her fifth goal of the season. Princeton drew a corner and Columbia was unable to recover as senior Kaitlyn Perrelle and sophomore Kathleen Sharkey both had shots saved before Reinprecht knocked in a rebound.
The Tigers extended their lead less than two minutes later on the first collegiate goal for freshman Molly Goodman. Classmate Michelle Cesan took a backhanded shot from the top of the circle that popped up and Goodman was able to direct it into the cage to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead.
Senior Christina Bortz scored the final goal of the first half as she won the race to a ball going through the circle and put it in for her third goal of the season. Sharkey added Princeton's final goal of the game in the second half. Her blast following a corner was her team-leading 10th of the season. Sophomore Katie Reinprecht assisted on the goal.
Princeton outshot Columbia 26-1 and held a 13-1 edge over the Lions in corners. Junior goalkeeper Jennifer King earned her second shutout in her last three games, while Columbia's Christie O'Hara made 12 saves.
The win was Princeton's third in a row and moved the Tigers to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. The Tigers also collected their third shutout of the season. Princeton is back in action on Sunday when it hosts fifth-ranked Connecticut at Class of '52 Stadium at 1 p.m., in a meeting of Top 10 teams.
