No. 8 Princeton Falls In Another Shootout, This Time At No. 10 Harvard
September 26, 2026 | Field Hockey
Seriously? Another shootout?Â
For the third time in seven games, the Princeton field hockey team went to a shootout after 75 minutes couldn't settle things. And for the third time, it didn't go Princeton's way.Â
No. 8 Princeton fell at No. 10 Harvard 2-1 in a penalty shootout in a matchup of Ivy League powers on a cold, windy, rainy Nor'Easter day in Cambridge. Princeton is now 4-3 overall — 4-0 in games that have not gone to shootouts and 0-3 in those that have. In fact, Princeton lost its second shootout in the rain in New England in seven days, after also dropping one to another Top 10 team, UConn, last Sunday in Storrs.Â
Princeton goalie Olivia Caponiti was the reason the game went to overtime in the first place. Caponiti made eight saves, tying her career high, including six in the second half. Of those six, one came on a penalty stroke attempt by Harvard in the fourth quarter.Â
Harvad scored first, off a penalty corner, midway through the second quarter, but Saylor Milone tied it with her second of the year, and second in two games, off another penalty corner, this time with 8:47 left in the third. The game stayed 1-1 for the remaining 38:47 of regulation and overtime, once again sending Princeton to a shootout, which Harvard won 4-2.Â
Princeton can take some solace in the fact that a year ago at this time the team was also 4-3, 1-1 in the league after a loss to Harvard, and then came back to win 14 straight games, two against the Crimson, to reach the NCAA championship game. There's no time to dwell on history, recent or a year ago, since the Tigers will host second-ranked an unbeaten Maryland Tuesday at 4.
