Princeton Hosts Unbeaten Maryland In Tuesday Afternoon Field Hockey
September 28, 2026 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON (4-3) vs. MARYLAND (9-0)
Tuesday, Sept. 29 • 4 pm
Bedford Field • Princeton, N.J.

A – Again?
The last 10 Princeton-Maryland games have all been decided by one goal. Princeton has won the last three in regulation; prior to that, Princeton and Maryland had played five straight overtime games. Every Princeton-Maryland game since Carla Tagliente and Dina Rizzo took over the Princeton program in 2016 has been decided by one goal; the teams are 5-5 in those 10 games.
B – Back Home
Princeton has played seven games, six on the road and one at home (Sept. 11 vs. Rutgers). Princeton now plays seven of its final nine games on Bedford Field.
C – Carla And Dina
Carla and Dina were both multiple time All-Americans and members of the 1999 NCAA championship team while players at Maryland. Both played for Missy Meharg, who is still the Terrapin head coach. Rizzo also coached under Meharg at Maryland and helped the Terps to back-to-back national championships (2010-11), four Final Four appearances, two ACC titles and then two straight Big Ten regular season titles (2014-15).
D – Defense
Princeton and Maryland rank 1-2 in Division I in goals-against average at 0.43 per game.
E – Each Of The Last Two
Saylor Milone did not have a goal as a freshman, when she started all 22 games. She missed the first four games this season due to injury, came off the bench and did not score against Penn, leaving her without a goal in her first 23 career games. She returned to the starting lineup against UConn and Harvard — and scored a goal against each.
F – Familiar?
Princeton is 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League after seven games. Princeton was in the exact same spot a year ago after seven games and then won 14 straight, reaching the NCAA championship game.
G – Grrrrr
Princeton is 4-0 in games that have not gone to shootouts and 0-3 in games that have gone to shootouts, including consecutive losses at UConn and Harvard.
H – How’s That?
Princeton has gone to a shootout in three of its first seven games this season, and all three of its games that have gone to overtime, including in back to back games. From the time Carla Tagliente and Dina Rizzo became Princeton’s coaches in 2016 through the end of last season, Princeton played in 30 overtime games — of which two went to shootouts.

I – Interesting
Princeton has yet to allow a goal this season in the run of play. Princeton has allowed three goals in seven games, all of which have come off penalty corners. Maryland averages 3.14 goals per game, 13th in Division I.
J – Just The Facts
Princeton is 36-13 since the start of the 2024 season, with an NCAA quarterfinal, an NCAA championship game appearance, an Ivy League championship and an Ivy League tournament title.
K – Know This

Q – Quite A Stat
Princeton has played the last 238:16 with the score either tied or with one team with a one-goal lead.

R – Really?
Princeton has trailed only twice this season (1-0 to both UConn and Harvard before tying it at 1-1) and yet has three losses.
