Sunny and 100 degrees. Rainy and 55. The Princeton field hockey team hasn't enjoyed either of its two shootouts this season, whatever the weather.
For the second time this year, No. 3 Princeton fell in a shootout, this time 2-1 in the rain at No. 10 UConn. Princeton is now 4-0 in games that haven't gone to shootouts and 0-2 in those that do, along with a loss at North Carolina.
Princeton trailed in a game for the first time this season when Connecticut scored off a penalty corner early in the third quarter. It was only the second goal allowed by Princeton this season, both of which have come on penalty corners. The deficit lasted almost 10 minutes, before Saylor Milone knocked in the first of her career off of a scramble in front after a Tiger corner.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter or in the 15 minutes of OT, though Princeton had the best two chances during that time. UConn then scored on three of its first four shootout attempts while Princetton failed to convert on any of its.
The Tigers play only one game this coming weekend, and it's a big one. Princeton will be at Harvard Saturday in a rematch of last year's NCAA semifinal and Ivy League tournament final, both of which were won by the Tigers after Harvard had won the regular season matchup.
