Hare Scores Game-Tying Goal Against Adelphi in a 1-1 Double Overtime Contest
October 08, 2009 | Men's Soccer
Princeton, N.J. (10/7/09) - Junior Max Hare scored the game-tying goal at 80:18, his first goal of the season, to help Princeton to a 1-1 tie with Adelphi in men's soccer on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
A yellow card called on Adelphi at 80:17 set up junior Brandon Busch for a free kick about 16 yards out and to the left of the 18-yard box. Busch sent a straight shot towards the goal and Hare gave it the extra tap to deliver it passed the diving goalkeeper.
The Tigers end a four-game losing skid with the tie and are now 4-4-1 on the season, while Adelphi had a six-game winning streak halted to drop to 7-1-3.
Issa Tall put Adelphi on the scoreboard first, at 27:14 when he sent a long rolling ball in on net from about 20 yards out with help from Brandon Stoneham.
Senior captain Devin Muntz had a shot sail just over the cross bar in the 38th minute, one of Princeton's best chances of the first half, besides two back-to-back close-range shots being blocked three minutes earlier.
The Tigers continued to battle to tie the game in the second, and out shot the Panthers 11-4. Sophomore Antoine Hoppenot had a breakaway opportunity 12 minutes into the second and he passed the ball off to senior Ben Harms. Harms was quickly smothered by three defenders so he slid the ball over to Colby Han who had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper but couldn't quite get his footing and the ball went into the open arms of goalkeeper Thorne Holder. Fifteen minutes later, Hoppenot again passed the ball off to Harms who had a terrific shot stopped by the outstretched hands of Holder.
Princeton's junior goalkeeper Sean Lynch made a great leaping save with less than four minutes to play in the second half when John Koutsounadis sent a shot in on goal after a bicycle kick pass from Johann Craan. The Panthers had another chance to take the lead when they received a free kick at the center top of the 18-yard box with one minute to play, but the ball was far too high and Princeton took it for a goal kick as the clock expired.
The Tigers had the better of the chances in the first overtime, outshooting the Panthers, 5-0. Two minutes in, Busch had a shot hit the near post and Hoppenot picked up the rebound but his shot went wide of the net. One minute later, Harms, freshman Matt Sanner and Teddy Schneider had some great team chemistry on an opportunity, but Schneider had the final shot blocked by a defender.
In the second overtime Adelphi's Mauricio Mora had a shot off a throw in stopped by Lynch, using both outstretched hands to keep the ball out of the net with three minutes to play. Craan had the last effort for either team at 108:52 with a low shot that was scooped up by Lynch to preserve the tie.
Lynch finished the game with four saves, while Holder made six stops.
Princeton had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks, while Adelphia 18 fouls to Princeton's nine.
The Tigers return to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Brown. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
