October 11, 2009 | Men's Soccer
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (10/10/09) - Freshman Matt Sanner sparked a Princeton rally in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the No. 19-ranked Brown Bears recorded 4-2 win in men's soccer on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Stevenson Field.
The Bears entered the game only giving up an average of 0.70 goals per game and just 9.7 shots per game. Princeton took 16 shots and put seven on net, while Brown had 19 shots, five of which were on goal.
Sean Rosa quickly but the Bears on the scoreboard scoring 1:46 into the game when he accepted a pass in the middle of the box from Mike Manella and knocked it into the right side of the net.
The final 30 or so minutes of the opening half was dominated by Princeton, but the Tigers couldn't manage to get the ball past goalkeeper Paul Grandstrand.
Brown got its next two goals within 21 seconds, as Rosa tallied his second of the evening at 50:19 and on the restart TJ Thompson fed Nick Elenz-Martin for a header into the top corner.
Sanner headed in a goal of his own in the 57th minute, when he sent the ball over Grandstrand's left shoulder and in to the right corner of the goal.
Jay Hayward extended Brown's lead in the 64th minute when he scored off a free kick from 35 yards out that curved into the right corner of the net.
A Brown player was called for a foul inside the box awarding Princeton a penalty kick. Junior Brandon Busch took the penalty kick and converted the shot to make it 4-2 at 69:08. The goal was his first of the season.
Grandstrand finished the game with five saves, while Lynch made one.
Brown improves to 6-0-4 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League to sit in first place along with Dartmouth who defeated Yale in overtime earlier today. Princeton falls to 4-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Princeton hosts St. John's on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m., in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU.
