Nare Scores First Career Goal in 1-1 Tie with St. John's

PRINCETON, N.J. (10/14/09) - Freshman Lester Nare scored his first collegiate goal, the game-tying goal in Princeton's 1-1 double overtime tie with St. John's on Wednesday, Oct. 14.The game was televised live on ESPNU, the first nationally televised game from Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
St. John's got on the scoreboard early, just 3:28 into the game, when Adam Himeno came streaking down the field to find a Nelson Becerra ball inside the box and kicked the ball into the net where it rolled under the top netting and into the near corner.
In the 19th minute, Princeton's goalkeeper Sean Lynch made his first of four stops of the night when he punched the ball from Tadea Terra shot off a Walter Hines cross out of play.
Princeton had its first scoring chance in the when junior Josh Walburn took a free kick from the middle of the field, about 20 yards out, but the ball missed high and wide to the right.
Eight minutes later Himeno tested Lynch with a header off a corner kick but Lynch was in perfect position to make the grab.
The Tigers had a great chance to even the game in the 27th minute, when sophomore Manny Sardinha picked up an Hoppenot pass but his shot was scooped up by goalkeeper Derby Carrillo.
Three minutes later St. John's leading scorer Sverre Wegge Gundhus blasted the ball towards Lynch who made the save but the ball squirted out to the right. Defender Benjamin Burton was there to kick the ball away to prevent any attackers from penetrating the goal.
Princeton came out in the second half and seemed to take control offensively, putting together nine shots to St. John's two. Less than two minutes in, senior Ben Harms had a header go just wide and three minutes later the Tigers would get the tying goal.
Hoppenot nearly added Princeton's second of the night in the 54th minute but took too much time settling a pass from Harms and the shot went right into the breadbasket of Carrillo.
With 19 minutes to play in the second half, Beccarra took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that curved in on the net but Lyynch was there to push the ball up and over the cross bar.
Neither team had a shot on net for the remainder of the half to force the overtime.
The Tigers had three shots in the first overtime, while the Red Storm did not have a single shot, but the teams pushed on into the second OT.
Less than a minute into the second overtime, Harms had a chance for Princeton but Carrillo made the stop on the shot from the left flank. With 10 seconds to play, Kyle Hoffer ripped a shot that deflected off of Lynch, and was saved by Princeton defender Mark Linnville to conclude the game in a draw.
Princeton had a 21-11 advantage in shots and had three corner kicks to St. John's four.
The Tigers made five saves, while Carrillo made six stops.
Tonight's game marked St. John's seventh overtime game of the season, playing all seven games to ties. The Red Storm is now 3-2-7 overall while Princeton moves to 4-5-2.
Princeton will host Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 17 in an Ivy League showdown at 4 p.m. The game will be a double header with the women's team, which will take on the Lions in the first game at 1 p.m.
