Football Coach Roger Hughes Relieved Of Duties At Princeton
November 22, 2009 | Football
Roger Hughes has been relieved of his duties as the Charles W. Caldwell Jr. head coach of football at Princeton, Director of Athletics Gary Walters announced today. A national search for a new successor will be held immediately.
Hughes went 47-52 in 10 seasons as Princeton head coach. The Tigers finished the 2009 season with a 4-6 record after defeating Dartmouth 23-11 on Saturday. Hughes came to Princeton in 2000 after having served as Dartmouth's offensive coordinator. He had three winning records at Princeton in his 10 seasons, including a 16-4 stretch in 2005 and 2006 that included a 9-1 record and the 2006 Ivy title.
"Roger Hughes has been a fine ambassador of the football program during his tenure as head coach," said Walters. "The University is grateful for his service, integrity and effort on behalf of the Princeton football program. Ultimately, given its commitment to achieving excellence across the board, the University has determined that a fresh start in the football program is needed."
In the coming days Walters will confirm with Hughes his role within the Athletics Department during the remainder of his contract. No decisions regarding the assistant coaches will be made until a new head coach is hired.
