Women's Basketball Makes Short Trip Down the 405 to UC Irvine Friday

LOS ANGELES (11/26/09) - The Princeton women's basketball team will make the hour trip down the 405 to take on UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.

Princeton suffered its first loss of the season, a 69-59 loss at UCLA on Wednesday. The Tigers led for the majority of the game and was down by five with just two minutes to play. The Tigers are 3-1 overall and are led by freshman Niveen Rasheed. Rasheed has a league-best 64 points and also leads the team in rebounds with 29. Sophomore Lauren Edwards has 54 points and junior Addie Micir follows with 52. Sophomore Devona Allgood is second on the team in rebounding with 24 boards total. The Tigers are shooting 45 percent from the floor (104-231), 35.7 percent from long range and an impressive 72.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Friday's game will be the first meeting between the two squads. This will be just the second team in the Big West that Princeton has ever played. The Tigers played Pacific at a tournament in Seattle, Wash., in 1996, falling 65-51.
UC Irvine is 1-3 on the season and was picked to finish ninth in the Big West Conference preseason poll. The Anteaters have lost to San Diego State, Colorado and CSU Bakersfield, while posting a three-point victory over Loyola Marymount. The team has played just one game at home, hosting
SDSU in the home opener on Nov. 13. Jade Smith-Williams and Rebecca Maessen are the top two scorers, averaging 14.5 and 10.3 points apiece, respectively. Smith-Williams also leads the team in assists with 23 and steals with 10. Kiara Belen is the leader under the basket corralling 8.0 rebounds per game, while Jazmyne White following with 6.0 boards per game. UC Irvine is shooting at a rate of 36.8 percent, is 57.1 percent from the line and 34.1 percent from long range. The team is in the deficit in scoring and rebounding margin against its opponents.
The Tigers will play three of its next four games at home, with the other game being just a quick 10-minute trip down Route 206 to Rider. First up, Princeton hosts Lehigh on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
