Rasheed's Double-Double Leads Princeton to 78-50 Win at Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. (11/27/09) - Freshman Niveen Rasheed recorded her first double-double, as the Princeton women's basketball team wrapped up its trip to Southern California with a 78-50 win over UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 27 at the Bren Center.
Rasheed scored 17 points and 10 rebounds and also had two steals in the game. Junior Addie Micir and sophomore Devona Allgood were also in double digits in scoring with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Allgood added six boards, while classmate Lauren Edwards pulled down seven and added nine points.
"It wasn't our best game on the year, but as we've come to expect, everyone contributed and they all played really hard," said head coach Courtney Banghart. "We did a great job with our inside out attack and we're able to make adjustments on both sides of the ball to secure us a victory. We challenged our kids to own the glass and I'm pleased to see the 15 rebound differential. It's a sign of both growth and toughness."
It took Princeton some time to get adjusted to the Irvine defense, with relentless pressure and quick movement in and around the paint.
The teams traded baskets to start with game with Allgood scoring eight of Princeton's 12 points, and Rasheed tallying the other four as Princeton held a 12-10 lead. Micir dropped in a two and a three by Edwards made it a nine-point game, 19-10 at 12:54.
The Anteaters cut to within five, 20-15, at 10:29, but Princeton grabbed a double-digit lead two minutes later as the Tigers scored the next six points. Four came from Rasheed and two from freshman Megan Bowen.
Irvine got a basket at 8:03 and it would be its last field goal from the floor until 0:39 thanks to the Princeton defense. On the other end of the court, Princeton found an answer to the Anteater defense and launched in three long balls, three from Micir and one from sophomore Beth Binkley at 1:47 to give the Tigers a 40-22 lead.
Jazmyne White scored Irvine's first basket from the floor in a span of 7:24 and the squad added another at the buzzer to give Princeton a 14-point lead, 40-26, headed into halftime.
Irvine opened up the second frame with two quick baskets and the teams would go back-and-forth for the next four minutes with the Anteaters getting within nine at 17:20. That would be as close as Irvine would get as the Tigers continued to expand their cushion.
With five minutes to play, Princeton held a 29-point lead with the score standing 74-45. The Tigers reached its largest lead of the game, 78-46 at 2:06, and closed out the game with a 78-50 victory.
Princeton shot 43.7 percent from the field, 41.2 percent from three-point range and 69.2 percent from the free throw line.
Rebecca Maessen who scored nine points led Irvine offensively. Jade Smith-Williams added eight points and Lauren Spinazze had seven. Raquel Theus and White each had a team-high six rebounds. The Anteaters shot 32.7 percent from the floor, 60 percent from the charity stripe and 20 percent from long range.
Princeton improves to 4-1 overall and returns home to host Lehigh on Wednesday, Dec. 2 and 2009 Sweet 16 team Rutgers on Saturday, Dec. 5. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
